How does a dental bridge work?

The standard bridge that most people receive is a traditional bridge. This involves placing two dental crowns on the abutment teeth next to the gap, with a pontic tooth attached to fill in the space in the gums.

A cantilever bridge is utilized in cases where there is only one tooth adjacent to the gap. Rather than using two dental crowns, a single dental crown is used to anchor the bridge. A pontic tooth is then attached to the crown to fill in the gap. This type of bridge is typically recommended for the rear molars.

A Maryland bridge is a type of bridge that is anchored in place using two teeth. Instead of using dental crowns on the abutment teeth, a pontic tooth with metal or porcelain wings is suspended and bonded behind the abutment teeth.

An implant-supported bridge functions similarly to a traditional dental bridge, but instead of using natural abutment teeth, dental implants are used. Crowns are placed on the implants, with a pontic tooth in between.
