As a rule, you are experiencing a dental emergency if any oral issue is causing you pain, discomfort or bleeding, and you do not know how to treat your condition on your own. Common dental emergencies include:

• Oral injuries that have resulted in cracked, broken, or knocked-out teeth
• Lacerations to the gums and cheeks
• Loose teeth
• Serious toothaches
• Pulled-out or loose dental work (fillings, crowns, etc.)

First, call Khanani Family Dental immediately and tell us that you’re coming in. Your tooth must be replaced within 1-2 hours for optimal results.

Only hold your tooth by the crown (top) not the root (bottom) to avoid damaging it.
Replace the tooth in its socket, if possible, or put it in a small baggie or container of cold milk. This keeps the tooth moist until you come and see Dr. Khanani.

Come into our Holden dental office as soon as you can. The sooner you see Dr. Khanani and have your tooth splinted and replaced, the more likely it is that we will be able to save it.

Dental emergencies require urgent treatment to prevent complications and to treat time-sensitive issues to minimize the risk of tooth loss. However, panicking will not help the situation and can lead to increased confusion and frustration.

When in a dental emergency, it’s important to first and foremost remain calm. If you need to practice some deep breathing to settle down first, we recommend doing so. This will help you stay level-headed so you can figure out what you need to do and communicate clearly with the dentist, which is the next step.

While we don’t recommend that you try to sort the situation out yourself, you should rinse out your mouth if you have suffered from an oral injury to remove fragments of teeth that could cut the inside of your mouth and to remove debris from the area that can be worsening pain and discomfort. If you are experiencing swelling, use an ice pack and take some anti-inflammatory pain medication but get to a dentist as soon as possible, as this is a sign of an infection.

Lost dental work such as fillings and crowns is considered a dental emergency. This is because your tooth is at an increased risk for infection and serious damage. If a filling falls out or becomes damaged, bacteria can enter the inner layers of the tooth, causing inflammation and infection which can be very painful.

Infection is serious and needs to be treated as soon as possible to prevent the loss of a tooth and the spread of the infection. When a tooth is covered with a dental crown, this is to protect a weak, vulnerable, or broken tooth. Without the protective cap, this tooth is at high risk for breakage which also increases infection risk.

Try to locate the missing dental restoration such as dental crowns or bridges and store it in a container and bring it with you to the dentist. They may be able to reattach it if it is undamaged.

Contact us right away to let us know that your dental work has fallen out so we know to accommodate space in our schedule for an emergency appointment. Until you can get here, keep your tooth and mouth clean by rinsing with a saline solution, and if you have to eat, eat on the other side of your mouth.

A severe toothache is a sign that something is wrong with the health of your tooth. Healthy teeth should not cause pain, let alone severe or debilitating pain. This could be a sign of infection, a deep cavity, or a severely damaged tooth. Contact us right away and let us know if you notice any swelling or an abscess. Rinse your mouth with a saline solution and take anti-inflammatory pain medication. Only use a cold compress if you’re experiencing swelling and get to the dentist right away. Don’t try to treat tooth pain yourself.
