Periodontal care refers to procedures used to treat gum (periodontal) disease. The most common treatment for gum disease is called “scaling and root planing” (also known as a deep cleaning). This treatment involves using a variety of special dental tools to remove plaque and tartar from between your teeth and gums. The roots of your teeth, where bacteria tend to collect, will also be smoothed out to prevent further bacteria buildup. Usually, scaling and root planing is also accompanied with antibiotic treatment to help destroy any remaining bacteria.

For more extensive cases of gum disease, it may be necessary to perform surgical intervention like gum grafting. Gum grafting is used to take healthy tissue from an area such as the roof of the mouth, and surgically attach it to the gums to repair them after they have been damaged by advanced gum disease. This helps restore and protect your teeth.

At your cosmetic dental appointment, Dr. Khanani will consult with you to examine the health and condition of your teeth and gums. Any detected oral health problems will need to be treated before you can move forward with cosmetic treatment. Severe damage to the teeth may also require more intensive restorative treatment.

Dr. Khanani will discuss your cosmetic goals and concerns with you to formulate a treatment plan that addresses any cosmetic imperfections with your teeth in the least invasive and budget-friendly way. He will discuss cost, scheduling, and sedation options with you.

Next, we will move forward with the first stage of the treatment. Depending on the treatment, we may need to take impressions of your teeth or use a shade guide to match the shade of your natural teeth to your restorations.

Your treatment may take one or a few appointments and this will be discussed during the treatment plan phase. After we’ve completed the cosmetic treatment, we will provide you with aftercare instructions

Anyone who is concerned with the appearance of their smile, or is in good oral and overall health, and does not have severe damage to their teeth is a great candidate for cosmetic dental treatment. Any signs of tooth decay, gum disease, or tooth infections will rule you out for cosmetic dentistry at least until these problems are resolved.

When teeth have been severely damaged, eroded, or broken, this will require a durable and strong restoration like a dental crown. While we can correct minor damage and orthodontic problems with cosmetic treatments, when these problems are severe you should undergo orthodontic treatment or restorative dentistry.

There is sometimes an overlap between cosmetic and restorative dentistry. For example, dental crowns restore the health and strength of a tooth to prevent it from breaking but we can also provide you with highly aesthetic tooth-colored crowns fabricated out of porcelain, ceramic, or zirconia. This provides you with the best of both worlds.

The most common cosmetic issues that are solved by cosmetic dentistry include tooth discoloration, minor chips & cracks, enamel erosion, slightly crooked teeth, small gaps, teeth that are awkwardly shaped, too small, or too sharp, and asymmetrical.
