How Long Do Dental Crowns Take?

How Long Do Dental Crowns Take? Same-Day Dentistry At Our Office

In the past, dental crowns took at least two appointments over a period of a few weeks. But at Khanani Family Dental, Dr. Khanani uses CEREC technology to provide crowns in just a single appointment at our office. How long does it take to get a same-day crown? Find out now!

What Is CEREC? Explaining The Basics

CEREC is short for CERamic REconstruction. This is a method of dentistry that uses CAD/CAM (Computer-Aided Design and Manufacturing) technology to quickly create dental restorations like crowns.

CEREC uses a special hand-held scanner, which takes a 3D image of your mouth. This is uploaded to a computer, then Dr. Khanani can sculpt and create a crown. This information is then sent to a special milling machine, and your crown is cut out from a block of solid porcelain in just a few minutes.

Using this advanced technology, we can place crowns in just one appointment at Khanani Family Dental. Let’s discuss the process in further detail now.

What To Expect From The CEREC Process

In most respects, the CEREC process is just like getting a traditional crown. However, you only need to visit us for a single appointment. Here’s a closer look at what to expect from the CEREC treatment process at Khanani Family Dental.

  • Initial tooth preparation – To begin the process, Dr. Salman Khanani will need to clean your mouth and prepare the treatment area by trimming away damaged or decayed enamel from the tooth. He will then sculpt it into a stable base that will support your CEREC crown.

  • Scanning your mouth – After the tooth is trimmed, Dr. Khanani will use a hand-held 3D scanner to take digital impressions of your teeth. This device assembles thousands of individual pictures into a 3D model.

  • Designing your crown – Using the 3D model of your mouth, Dr. Khanani will use a special computer and a computer program to design your crown and make sure it will fit into your mouth perfectly.

  • Carving your crown – Once Dr. Khanani has finalized your crown design, he will load a small block of porcelain into the CEREC milling machine. Then, this machine will follow Dr. Khanani’s design, and trim this block into a fully functional, natural-looking dental crown. This takes only a few minutes.

  • Final checks & trimming – After your crown has been made by the CEREC machine, Dr. Khanani will remove it and then check the crown to make sure it fits perfectly. He will make any minor necessary adjustments, then Dr. Khanani will permanently attach the crown to your tooth with dental cement.

CEREC Crowns Usually Take About 2 Hours From Start To Finish

So, how long does this process take? Usually, the CEREC crown process takes about 2 hours from start to finish, including your oral exam, tooth preparation, designing, building, and placing your crown. This is a lot faster and a lot more convenient than seeing your Holden dentist for 2+ visits over a period of several weeks!
